Seminar “How to Enjoy the Process of Scientific Writing” held by CPPS UGM on Friday (11/15/2019) was one of interesting event to note.

Prof. Ben White, as the speaker, gave some tips on good and fun scientific writing. First, when the writer(s) writes scientific paper like a thesis, he advised the writer(s) to be able to firstly forget that he is writing a thesis. Second, anything related to the affairs with the supervisor can also be forgotten for a moment. He then emphasized the participants to try to communicate with what they wanted to write, “Hear the voice of your book speaking to you, and write it …” he said.

The fourth tip is to keep on exercising. “Writing is not just a matter of talent, but also about practice,” he said. The exercise is supported by frequently reading books and not delaying to write it immediately. Finally, he reminded to continue writing in a discipline habit.

“All successful writers usually have discipline or routine writing habit. Some are happy to write in the morning, some at night. It’s also important to do and get used to,” he added.

 

 

Yogyakarta, CPPS UGM –  Politics and comedy have a long history and level. In recent decades, politics and comedy have changed from ‘awkward friends’ to ‘inseparable alliances’.

Couple weeks ago, huge demonstrations held by thousands of students from various campuses were seen in major cities of Indonesia. The protesters were taken to the streets to urge the government to pass the new Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) law and revoke the new Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and Draft Bill of Criminal Code (RKUHP) laws.

One interesting moment during the protest occurred from “funny” writings on the posters, such as ‘My skin care products are expensive, there must be a serious problem that finally made me head to the streets’.

People of generation Z are trying to convey their political aspirations in a new way, that is, by making demo posters or banners in a humorous style.

Sakdiyah Ma’ruf, while presenting the related topic on a seminar held by CPPS UGM entitled “Fighting with Joy: Humor in National Political Communication,” Monday (10/21), said that humor is currently gaining its moment.

Different from the youth of 1998, according to Sakdiyah, the people of generation Z who participated for the first time in democracy (i.e. voting on elections) and preserving democracy (protests and demonstrations) seemed not only to focus on the problems they were fighting for, but also brought the issues with random and personal references.

The sentence like, ‘my skin care products are expensive, there must be a serious problem that finally made me head to the streets’, colored the sphere of demonstrations throughout Indonesia and made the protesters of the year excited and the most important thing is viral,” Sakdiyah said.

There are four things about people of generation Z. Sakdiyah explained, “They are gathered in groups but their expression is very individual because for them, standing out (not partisans) and having a personal dialogue are important way to resolve the existing conflicts and to make the decisions pragmatically”.

The posters brought by the Gen Z to the streets had gained people’s attention because of their unique humor and messages of celebration and participation. But the posters also might also not raise public awareness on the main issues of demonstrations.

“They (protesters) made strong and clear messages, showing that the new generation (Gen Z) is alive and wholesome, and ready to fight for it in any ways they wanted,” she continued.

Sakdiyah added that the writings have four categories; Focus Issues, Pop Culture, Personal and Random Life References.

The posters with Focus on Issues writings were referred to the political conditions they were experiencing, such as “Dear police officers, please don’t persecute me! I’m Mr. Tito’s nephew.” There were also Pop Culture writings in which the appreciation was conveyed by including the latest trends, such as “Korean drama is not as fun as the parliament drama.

Meanwhile, the reference concerning personal life showed the poster referred to personal matters such as, “It’s ok that my love story failed, but not KPK!”. The last category has referent ‘random’ that is not directly related to the context of demonstrations (e.g. “Dear Mom, your son wants to get married soon”.

Humor is not merely a joke, but a meaningful entity, especially in political contestation to voice and get the authorities’ attention.

It can also help people gain perspectives, digest problems, and release tension regarding situations of anxiety, confusion and hopelessness.

Mutual self-recognition in humor is the most powerful weapon for showing humanity, political maturity and a respect for people intelligence. “We understand the satirical and metaphorical languages, but what we don’t understand is hate speech,” she responded.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yogyakarta, CPPS UGM – Center for Population and Policy Studies (CPPS) Universitas Gadjah Mada held an internal seminar on September 17, 2019 with the theme “Decision Making and Behaviors for Sustainable Spatial Development Process” delivered by Datuk Ary A. Samsura, a lecturer in Radboud University, Netherlands.

Urban planning is currently facing many problems. First, the compartmentalization process becomes the crucial one, such as urbanization. We initially thought that Indonesia is an agricultural country. However, more than 51% of Indonesia population lives in cities from 2015 to date. Even, the number of people living in urban areas reaches 56% today. The urbanization process is not only meant as a movement of people from rural to urban areas, but is also interpreted as a shift in the physical characteristics of villages. Second, there is an increasingly sharp social and economic class disparity. Third, the current social movement is higher by the increasing use of social media as a source of information. These three issues do not only affect the shift in human activities, but also the morphology of the city. Public spaces become more open that the initial conditions (closed).

These challenges have implications for the complexity of the dynamics of the city which become higher because of the increase in the number of stakeholders and diverse preferences of each stakeholder. According to Datuk Ary, it cannot only be seen from the increase in quantity and preferences of each stakeholder, but also the increase in relationship of interdependence among them. He pointed out one example, “When someone wants to express his opinion, it will then become a discourse (public discussion) if the opinion is accepted by the public.”

Regarding the increasingly sharp and high complexity of the dynamics of the city and many challenges in the planning process of urban establishment, there has been a paradigm shift related to spatial planning. The planning was initially considered rational. The academicians, who study spatial planning, are trained to be the experts who can overcome the problems with all their rational thinking. Therefore, they would make detailed rules on how to establish a city as efficiently as possible. Eventual planning becomes a control and intervention effort to change a space.

Meanwhile, it is now impossible for spatial planning experts or urban planning planners to be able to know what is most rational and good in the future. This is because what we want in the future is subjective in nature. Moreover, the rationality of an individual varies from one to another. Datuk Ary emphasizes that each individual’s preferences have no certain indicator. Finally, what can be done by spatial planning experts or urban planning planners is how they accommodate any kinds of community eagerness. They are educated not to be the experts, but the facilitators who accommodate any kinds of the eagerness and preferences of different individual, and thus a joint decision is formulated.

The results of this joint decision can later turn into something to please many parties and lead to a “tragedy of the common”. It is regarded as the interdependence relationship among actors in decision making process which lead to the loss of the decision makers. However, this can be avoided by the availability of the sources of adequate information.

“POPULATION AND SOCIAL POLICY IN A DISRUPTED WORLD”

Yogyakarta, PSKK UGM – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) proudly holds International Conference “Population and Social Policy in a Disrupted World” and series of Summer Course “International Labour Migration in the Shifting World: New Insights and Policy Challenges” activity.

The implementation of the activity departs from three problematic matters accompanying world change. First, the incompleteness of epidemiological transition in rapidly developing countries such as countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The epidemiological transition begins from complex changing in health status and the main pattern of disease causing death, where there is a decrease in the prevalence of communicable diseases, while degenerative diseases tend to be catastrophic, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, are increasing.

Changing of lifestyle, increasing of consumption of fast food highly containing cholesterol, salt, sugar, but low in fiber; and low physical activity such as exercise cause people vulnerable to degenerative diseases. Lately, many teenagers suffer from degenerative diseases. If it is not well handled, it will affect the quality of the young population. Handling such problem draws most of the financial and technical resources belong to the government.

Second, issues and problems of complex voluntary and forced international labor migration. Voluntary or forced international migrant workers become a group which is vulnerable to human right violation and they become a trading “commodity”. This has been going on for a long time and demanding a commensurate policy to avoid hardship suffered by international migrant workers. In general context of international migration, trends in some countries implementing “anti-migrant” policy also emerge a separated problem. This mainly refers to migration policies applied by the United States and some countries in Europe. An important question in this context is; where is the role of the states, in both sending and receiving countries? Addition to that, technological progress should provide opportunities for the government to develop protection policies for international migrant workers.

Third, the lack of social protection aimed to minimise population problems previously explained. The increasing number of elderly people, for example, needs to be accompanied by adequate health services for the elderly and a better and comprehensive policy scheme. All formal and informal workers, local or international migrants, should also have a social protection scheme which protects them from illnesses and accidents at work. Moreover, the problem of poverty as an unfinished agenda demands rethinking of all applied policies.

The three issues above are getting complex after major changes occur, those are marked by developments of information and globalization technology, which cause a very fast change or “disrupted world”. Almost every line of our lives, both in private and public spheres, changes to be digital, online, connected to each other. Not only is it without problems, in industrial relations for example, the existence of an all-digital system actually also contributes serious employment issues.

The conference taking place at University Club Hotel, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta is able to generate various critical questions on the issues. The conference presents resource persons whose reputations in their fields, they are Dr. Lothar Smith (Human Geography, Institute for Management Research, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands), Prof. Dr. Ben White (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands), Prof. Maria Fasli, Ph.D., NTF, FHEA (UNESCO Chair of Analytics and Data Science), and Prof. Rebecca Surender, Ph.D., (Department of Social Policy, Oxford University, the United Kingdom). Minister of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), Prof. Dr. Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro is scheduled to attend, at last he will be represented by Director for Planning, Population and Social Security of BAPPENAS, Maliki, ST, MSIE, Ph.D., to deliver keynote speech.

Summer Course

The activity series of Summer Course activities taking the title: “International Labour Migration in the Shifting World: New Insights and Policy Challenges” will be carried out for ten days, from 7 to 17 August 2018. This activity combines discussion activities in class, study field, report writing, and presentation sessions.

The Summer Course will be participated by 35 participants from Indonesia and overseas. Foreign participants are coming from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Syria and the Philippines. In the field activities, participants of the summer course will make visits to three Villages of Migrant Workers (Desbumi) in Wonosobo District, those are Kuripan Village, Rogojati Village, and Lipursari Village. The only goal is the participants of the summer course will be able to recognize one of local initiatives with all problems and challenges. []
