The program, PLAN International, aimed at child welfare in the Gunung Kidul district has been running for a number of years and will finish in 2002. PLAN Indonesia asked CPPS to evaluate the program. The research findings showed that the support provided by PLAN improved family welfare. The PLAN’s support for the development of children had a great impact. Assistance provided by PLAN and family welfare jointly contributes to the better childhood development, which is reflected in physical, cognitive, and educational achievements. The evaluation of the PLAN program demonstrated that this program could be considered effective. However, as the PLAN Indonesia will leave Gunung Kidul, there is a needed for a substitute program aimed at encouraging optimal growth and development of the children of poor families. The substitute program is now on the responsibility of local society and regional government. Therefore, this research recommends PLAN to approach the government of Gunung Kidul to conduct a similar program for poor families and their children. Generally, the research also underlines the recommendation to increase the budget for education so that the young generation will have optimal cognitive and academic opportunities.
