14 Januari 2022 - 11:45:09The economic crisis in Indonesia has been assumed to cause the increase of structural poverty. As a result, many children have to work to support their families. Children who enter the labor world are potential risk to get involved in child trafficking problem, including prostitution. To get the picture of child trafficking, this research has been designed to achieve the following objectives: 1) to generate qualitative data related to children’s involvement in prostitution, including the nature, causes and consequences, 2) to produce quantitative data on the magnitude of children’s involvement in prostitution, 3) to explore gender dimensions of children’s involvement in prostitution, including differences in causes, sensitivity to conditions as well as factors that cause gender differences, and 4) to propose recommendation for addressing the problem.
Based on the research result in Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java, it can be described that child trafficking is a problem that requires a serious action. The victims of child trafficking mostly come from poor families, especially those coming from poor rural areas. Up to the now, the government’s apparatus do not have sufficient capability to handle the problem of child trafficking. This situation is caused not only by the lack of supporting evidence to show that the child trafficking phenomena does exist, but also their lack of attention to this particular problem.
