The decreasing number of maternal mortality has been pertained to the significant role of bidans (midwives) and paramedics who provide pregnancy care and childbirth examinations. Aside from poor medical facilities of Puskesmas (Primary Health Care), some constraints commonly dealt with bidan that led to substandard services are exhaustion, lack of communication. It is very important, therefore, to develop bidan’s proficiency.

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of training of layanan simpatik (sympathetic services) and decision making process of bidan’s work performance in handling such emergency cases of pregnancy and childbirth. The training had involved 24 bidans of Puskesmas selected from Kabupaten Bantul and Kotamadya Yogyakarta. The training involved both medical and non medical skills, which should be mastered by the bidans in interacting with pregnant women and their families. The training include emphatic-therapeutic-persuasive communication skills, decision making and stress management skills, and emergency communication skills.

The research designs were quasi-experimental by taking training as treatment. The effectiveness of training were measured by conducting tests before and after experimental research taken place. The tests contain assessment on work performance and communication skill of the bidans, particularly to minimize nervousness when communicating in public sphere.

The study shows a significant difference between ‘before’ and ‘after’ training with respect to work performance and communication skill of the bidans. The statistical test indicates a general trend that the score of bidans’ work performance has increased while their nervousness has decreased. It further indicates that the training of layanan simpatik and decision making process were effectively able to develop work performance of the bidans, especially in pregnancy and childbirth services.
