In 2021, CPPS UGM has adjusted to almost all academic aspects, such as education, research, and community services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The most obvious affected ones are seen in population mobility, mortality and morbidity issues, fertility pattern and reproductive health, poverty and social protection, governance, and so on. Big data and digital technology have enriched and empowered various population analysis. Numerous disciplines have undergone a revolution—often unbeknownst to scholars in the field. These scientific revolutions have occurred, first, because of changes to the dynamics of practices amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and second, because of interdisciplinary interactions which tend to create knowledge clusters while avoiding specialization. Moreover, the pandemic has created many new important population topics, policy innovations, and new opportunities for future research.

CPPS UGM has attempted to anticipate the direction of this revolution in academic disciplines by developing and organizing a variety of research projects throughout 2021. Multiple collaborative projects have been completed with our partners, both domestic and international, and the results have been judged exemplary. These include (but are certainly not limited to) researching Women’s Role in Family Survival amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and Community access to clean water in Indonesia, and the 2021 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Study of Bontang City.

Though many of these research projects were developed along applicative lines, they have also contributed to the development of knowledge. Most of the data from these research projects has been used by the CPPS UGM researchers to write books or journal articles, and some community assistance programs of CPPS UGM have departed from the findings of these projects. No less interesting are the several national seminars organized in response to the results of the CPPS UGM research.

Finally, we hope that you enjoy the innovative activities and publications of the staff of CPPS UGM, particularly those related to realizing our institution’s vision “Becoming a research school which combines education with research and is able to become a pillar in the creation of a quality and educated generation for our nation”.
